Post-surgical rehabilitation

Rehab after surgery, from the first stiff week forward

Knee, hip and shoulder surgery and joint replacements leave you stiff and weak. Our Doctors of Physical Therapy build the plan, send the evaluation to your physician of choice, and see you through the staged work of getting strong again.

After the surgery, before you feel like yourself

Surgery fixes the joint, and then the rest of the work begins. Stiffness, weakness and a leg or arm that no longer trusts itself are common reasons people come to us after knee, hip or shoulder surgery and joint replacements.

You do not need a referral to be evaluated, and most evaluations happen within one or two business days. Call (715) 803-7617 and we will find the nearest clinic and the earliest appointment.

How the plan is built

Your first visit is an evaluation with a Doctor of Physical Therapy, typically about an hour. The evaluation is sent to your physician of choice, so your surgeon sees what we find and what we plan.

Strength and range of motion are rebuilt in stages, with manual therapy and exercise-based rehab. At our Wisconsin Rapids clinic, aquatic therapy is an option, because water takes weight off a healing joint. Your therapist decides at the evaluation whether the pool fits.

Getting back to ordinary days

Stairs, getting out of a chair and carrying groceries are the measures that matter to most patients, and we plan around them. Home exercises carry the work between visits, so do them as your therapist shows you and follow the plan of care.

We accept a long list of insurance plans, including Medicare and Medicaid. Check our insurance page, or call and we will go through your coverage with you.

A patient in Wisconsin Rapids

“Before coming here, I couldn't walk right after my knee surgery. I could do stairs, but it would take me five minutes to get down two. Now leaving her I was going up on a 12-inch stair no problem!”
