Your first visit, from the front door to the plan.

Welcome to Roberts Physical Therapy. The initial evaluation is an interview about your medical history and a thorough look at your current symptoms. You do not need a referral, and you spend the whole session with the undivided attention of your physical therapist.

What happens in the room

Your past medical and current injury history is recorded, you complete a functional status measure, and a physical examination determines the nature and severity of the injury or symptoms. The therapist may look at:

  • Strength
  • Range of motion
  • Flexibility
  • Posture
  • Mobility
  • Movement patterns

The exam is followed by a talk about your diagnosis and what to expect from future sessions. In most cases treatment starts that day. Your physical therapist then explains the individual plan of care designed for you, and you can ask about it at any time. Your evaluation goes to the physician of your choice, so their records stay current. Curious which treatment fits? Browse the nine treatments.

What is a doctor of physical therapy?

Seven years of schooling before the first patient.

Doctors of physical therapy are highly trained specialists who work with patients to restore their activity, strength and motion after an injury or surgery. Before they begin practice they gain hands-on experience in a variety of clinical settings and pass a rigorous national board exam to become eligible for licensure in their state, and they keep training for the length of their careers.

Because your goal is to enjoy life, and ours is to help you overcome your current musculoskeletal issue. Since you do not need a referral to see a physical therapist, we are often able to schedule your evaluation within one to two business days of you contacting the clinic. That quick turnaround helps minimize the time it takes to return to your pre-injury status.

Physical therapy and aquatic therapy for balance disorders, chronic headaches and migraines, TMJ pain, neck pain and whiplash, shoulder pain, rotator cuff injuries, golfer's or tennis elbow, upper and lower back pain, sciatica, hip, knee, ankle and foot pain or injuries, plantar fasciitis, arthritis, fibromyalgia, neurological disorders including peripheral neuropathy, car accident injuries, sports injuries, sport-specific rehabilitation, post-surgical rehabilitation and workers' compensation claims.

The doctors of physical therapy here use effective treatment techniques and take the time to teach you the cause, treatment and prevention of your problem. We believe an informed patient, who understands the how and why of their injury, will have a faster and more permanent recovery than a patient who is left in the dark.

Recovery time depends on your diagnosis, how you respond to treatment and whether you complete your exercises outside of treatment. Patients who follow the plan of care their physical therapist provides tend to have better outcomes.

Without a full medical history we cannot know what you were given before. We do believe physical therapy is a long-term program that can help people become less reliant on other drugs or surgeries and gain the strength and mobility to reach their health goals. Your clinician will talk through those goals at the initial evaluation and build a plan of care that meets your expectations.

Each patient responds differently, and no two bodies are alike, so the length of care varies. Your physical therapist works with you to set your health goals and builds the plan together with you.

Treatment is decided at your initial evaluation. A trained clinician runs a series of tests to find the best option for your condition, then creates a plan of care with your long-term health goals in mind.
