The usual work injuries

Work injuries show up more often in physically demanding jobs, but they can happen in just about any profession, including a desk job. The ones that come through our doors most are strains of the lumbar or thoracic spine, shoulder strains or impingement, sprains, fall injuries and overuse or repetitive strain.

Other job site related injuries get the same treatment. Whatever the cause, the first question is the same: how did it happen, and what does it stop you from doing at work?

The claim, handled before you arrive

A workers' compensation claim can feel daunting, and the practice is there to help as much as it can. After you file a claim with your employer, the next step is an appointment with your doctor. Depending on how serious the injury is, the doctor may recommend imaging, physical therapy or modified return-to-work accommodations.

When you call to schedule at Roberts Physical Therapy, the front desk will ask for three things: the claim number and the adjuster's contact information, a referral from your doctor, and the date of the injury along with your employer's information. Have those ready and scheduling takes one short call.

Every workers' compensation carrier is accepted, so you are not hunting for the one clinic your adjuster has heard of.

From the first exam back to the work floor

Your first appointment is time spent with a therapist who listens to how you were hurt, then evaluates your symptoms, strength and range of motion. Once there is a diagnosis, treatment targets the acute symptoms from the injury and adds a movement program to restore range of motion and mobility.

The plan is customised with your input and your goals. As you improve, care moves into a work conditioning program that prepares your body for the demands of the job you are returning to, which is how the practice works to keep re-injury from following you back to work.

Brett Roberts, DPT, and the Wisconsin Rapids, Amherst and Plainfield therapists see work injury patients every week. Call (715) 803-7617 to start.
